Nakamoto Project Spends Millions on WSJ Ad Campaign Amid Funding Mystery
The Nakamoto Project, a pro-Bitcoin nonprofit, has been running a series of print ads in the Wall Street Journal to promote digital currency awareness. The campaign, which started in late August, includes six full-page and 24 quarter-page ads, with a total estimated cost of around $2.17 million.
The organization's initiative aims to educate people about Bitcoin and clear up misunderstandings surrounding the asset. According to its president, Colin Brown, 'We thought it was really important to create an honest… engagement with people that maybe are at the precipice of knowing Bitcoin by name, but can’t engage much more than that with their level of understanding.'
The Nakamoto Project's funding is shrouded in mystery. The organization reported receiving $275,000 in contributions during its first year of operations, but a single donor was listed as the sole contributor for 2023. Brown claimed that the project's initiative was 'funded by the generosity of Bitcoiners at large,' with generous donations from people aligned with the mission.
