Nasdaq Secures SEC Approval for Cash-Settled Bitcoin Index Options
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has cleared Nasdaq to list cash-settled Bitcoin index options, ending years of regulatory delay around onshore crypto derivatives. This move is seen as a significant step forward in the development of institutional-grade cryptocurrency products.
Nasdaq's new product allows professional desks to access exchange-traded, cash-settled Bitcoin options without touching spot BTC or navigating the physical-delivery mechanics of ETF-based contracts. The clearing and settlement process will be handled by the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC), which provides a similar framework for S&P 500 index options.
The approval marks the culmination of a multi-year runway that began with the January 2024 spot Bitcoin ETF approvals and accelerated through Washington's current wave of crypto-friendly rulemaking. The SEC has been working closely with industry stakeholders to create a regulatory environment that supports innovation in the cryptocurrency space.
