NC Police Officer Foils Crypto Scam on 90-Year-Old Woman
A 90-year-old woman in North Carolina nearly lost $10,000 to a cryptocurrency scam until a police officer intervened.
Mary Ann Nunley received a text message on July 27 saying her account with Geek Squad had ended and $390 would be taken out. She called the number provided, but it led to hours of back-and-forth with a scammer who convinced her she needed to take nearly $10,000 to a bitcoin kiosk to fix the situation.
Nunley drove to a gas station in Wilmington where she was intercepted by Wilmington Police Officer Nicholas Morrison. Recognizing the warning signs of a crypto scam, he stopped her and told her not to put her money in the machine. He helped Nunley end the call with the scammer and confirmed that Geek Squad had no involvement in taking her money.
Morrison drove Nunley to Best Buy to verify the account status and then took her to the bank to redeposit her cash, saving her from losing nearly $10,000.
