NC Police Officer Foils Crypto Scam, Saves Woman from Losing $10,000
Mary Ann Nunley, a 90-year-old woman from Wilmington, North Carolina, narrowly escaped losing $10,000 to a cryptocurrency scam.
The scam began on July 27 with a text message claiming her account with the Geek Squad had ended and that $390 would be taken out of her account. Nunley called the number provided, but was instead led down a rabbit hole of hours-long conversations with the scammer who promised to return her money in exchange for her taking nearly $10,000 to a nearby Bitcoin kiosk.
Nunley drove to the gas station where the machine was supposed to be located, only to find it broken. That's when Wilmington Police Officer Nicholas Morrison stepped in, recognizing warning signs of the scam and stopping Nunley from putting any more money into the machine.
Morrison helped Nunley end the call with the scammer and confirmed she hadn't lost any money. He then took her to Best Buy to verify that the Geek Squad was not involved in taking her money, before driving her to the bank to redeposit the cash.
