NEAR Introduces Stake-to-Compute: A New Staking Mechanism for AI Services
NEAR Protocol has launched a staking-based payment mechanism that allows holders to access AI services by staking NEAR. The system, known as stake-to-compute, generates compute credits based on the user's staked NEAR position, which can be used to access AI inference, cloud services, and continuously running AI agents.
The mechanism is non-custodial, meaning that users retain ownership of their staked NEAR and control over the wallet's private keys. The system resembles a subscription model, where customers pay through several less visible costs: forfeited staking rewards, exposure to NEAR price movements, and reduced liquidity during the unstaking period.
There are two related but distinct implementations: Agent Hosting Staking and Cloud Staking. Both route staking rewards to NEAR AI, but they differ in how credits are issued and used. NEAR AI's terms explicitly state that the credits should not be represented as interest, dividends, investment returns or securities.
The platform supports various AI workloads, including reasoning models, tool calling, embeddings, reranking, image generation, audio transcription, and privacy-related endpoints. The service is aimed more directly at developers, agent operators, and businesses than at holders looking for a basic consumer chatbot.
