NEAR Surges Amid Derivatives Squeeze and Technical Breakout
Near Protocol (NEAR) experienced a significant price surge of around 3.5% over the last 6 hours, driven primarily by derivatives-driven short covering and technical breakout buying.
This move is notable as it outperformed the broader market, with the total crypto market cap rising only about 1.34% in the same period. NEAR's price has also increased by approximately 7.7% over the last 24 hours.
The derivatives market played a significant role in this surge, with a sizable short book getting squeezed on perpetual futures contracts (perps). A $7.2M short book on perps was underwater, with four of eight tracked shorts losing around $6.3M notional and the largest individual short of $4.6M at $2.04 now deep in loss.
This microstructure created a 3-4% move over a few hours without any new headline. As NEAR broke above nearby resistance, shorts began to cover, buying back into a relatively thin order book on perps, which accelerated the move higher.
