Nepal's Flash Flood Disaster Tests Blockchain Aid
Nepal is facing a massive humanitarian disaster after flash floods caused widespread destruction, affecting an estimated 93,000 people and prompting an emergency appeal for 25 million Swiss francs from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
The IFRC's appeal highlights the challenge of getting aid to those who need it most in a situation like this, where traditional delivery methods are hindered by damaged infrastructure. The organization notes that digital money, stablecoins, and blockchain tracking could make a significant difference.
Nepal has already experimented with blockchain technology through the Rahat platform, which uses digital tokens, QR codes, and text messages to deliver cash to vulnerable families in real-time. UNICEF's review of the system found it to be effective in remote areas where traditional aid delivery methods are often unreliable.
