Nevada Crypto Entrepreneur Faces 280 Years for Alleged $24 Million Ponzi Scheme
A Nevada-based crypto entrepreneur, Brent Kovar, is facing up to 280 years in prison after allegedly running a massive Ponzi scheme that defrauded investors of $24 million.
Kovar's scheme promised returns ranging from 15% to 30% annually with a 100% money-back guarantee, but instead of using the funds for legitimate investment, he used them to pay off earlier investors and fund his own lavish lifestyle.
The scheme involved Kovar's company, which purportedly used AI software on a supercomputer to mine cryptocurrency and verify transactions. However, investigators found that Kovar was unable to pay back even the interest earned by his victims, let alone honor his guarantee.
Kovar is charged with 11 counts of wire fraud, two counts of mail fraud, and two counts of money laundering. His case highlights the growing problem of crypto-related crimes in the US, which has yet to be adequately addressed through regulation.
