New Cryptocurrency Creation Spikes 151%, Most Tokens Fail

Share

The number of new cryptocurrencies has skyrocketed by over 150% in just one year, driven by low-cost blockchain networks and automated token-creation tools.

Data from CoinMarketCap shows that the total number of tracked cryptocurrencies climbed from 23.45 million on September 4, 2025, to 59.08 million on September 2, 2026, a 151.94% increase.

The growth accelerated around March 2026, when the count jumped from about 39 million to over 46 million before reaching a record 59 million by early September.

However, the rapid expansion has not translated into long-term success. Research by CoinGecko found that nearly 20.2 million tokens launched between mid-2021 and the end of 2025 are no longer actively traded, with 53.2% of those failing to achieve lasting adoption.
