New York Ranks Second Safest in Country for Cryptocurrency Scams
A study from DuelBits found that New York is the second safest state in the country for cryptocurrency scams. The researchers evaluated various factors, including cybercrime rates, cryptocurrency ownership, Google searches related to scams, state regulations, and the number of cryptocurrency ATMs per resident.
New York received a safety score of 76.51 out of 100, with Louisiana ranking first. The study suggests that New York's strict regulations and limited number of crypto ATMs may make it more difficult for scammers to operate in the state.
One key factor contributing to New York's high safety score is its BitLicense requirement, which requires businesses conducting virtual currency activities in the state to obtain a license and follow New York's regulatory standards. The study gave New York a perfect score of 100 for the strictness of its cryptocurrency laws, the highest score in the country.
Additionally, New York has one of the lowest rates of crypto ATMs, with approximately 1.94 machines per 100,000 residents. This relatively low number could make it more challenging for scammers to use these machines to pressure victims into depositing cash before they have time to question what is happening.
