New Zealand Dollar Shorts Face High Bar for Further Losses
New Zealand Dollar (NZD) bears have taken on extreme short positions, but MUFG's latest client note suggests that further depreciation may be limited. The bank attributes this to a combination of factors, including a dovish Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) outlook, soft domestic economic data, and persistent US Dollar strength.
The bank notes that speculative traders have piled into bearish bets on the NZD, making it one of the most shorted currencies in the G10 space. However, MUFG cautions that such one-sided positioning often sets the stage for a reversal, especially if any positive surprise emerges.
MUFG's analysis suggests that while the NZD remains vulnerable to US Dollar strength and global risk sentiment, the risk-reward for further downside is becoming less attractive. The bank notes that the RBNZ has already signaled a pause in its easing cycle, which could provide some support to the currency.
