Nexus ID Breach Exposes Blueprint for Widespread Identity Theft
A massive data breach has exposed over 170 million records, including driver's licenses and IDs from the US and Canada. The dark-web marketplace claims to have siphoned this information for more than a year from IDScan.net, an identity verification company in New Orleans.
Experts warn that this breach goes beyond a simple password dump. Driver's licenses contain sensitive information like photographs, home addresses, and dates of birth, which cannot be easily reset or changed.
The presence of infrared and ultraviolet scans on the stolen IDs makes it even more alarming. These scans are used to verify authenticity and can potentially be used by criminals to create fake documents that are difficult to detect.
Dr. Marilyne Ordekian, a cybersecurity expert, warns that this breach opens up 'a great deal of trouble' for anyone who uses ID-gated systems, including banks, cryptocurrency exchanges, and other online services.
