NFT Projects: Look Beyond the Artwork for Genuine Value
The world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) has seen its fair share of hype and speculation. However, not every NFT project is created equal. A 2023 analysis by dappGambl found that 95% of the 73,257 NFT collections it examined had a market cap of zero ETH, indicating most of these collections have little to no remaining market value.
Established collections such as CryptoPunks and Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) continue to command high prices. So, how can you tell whether an NFT project has genuine value before buying? The key is to look beyond the artwork and examine the team, utility, community, scarcity, demand, and market activity.
When evaluating an NFT project, consider it as investing in a small company at its seed stage. You're not just paying for a picture; you're betting on a team's ability to execute, a product's ability to create lasting demand, and whether enough people will want the NFT later for you to sell it.
A 2026 analysis by CoinGecko puts the global NFT market cap at roughly $2 billion, while established collections such as CryptoPunks, BAYC, Pudgy Penguins, and select Art Blocks pieces continue to command high prices.
