Nigeria Loses Ground in Crypto Leadership as Kenya and South Africa Gain

Share

Nigeria's position as Africa's top cryptocurrency market is under threat from rival countries Kenya and South Africa, which are adopting more attractive regulatory approaches to investors and startups.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Nigeria has introduced a tough licensing regime, requiring digital asset exchanges and custodians to maintain a minimum paid-up capital of N2 billion. However, this move has divided the industry with some critics arguing that it will hurt innovation and discourage local participation.

In contrast, Kenya has lowered the capital requirement for stablecoin issuers by 40 percent to KSh300 million from KSh500 million proposed in draft regulations released in March. This move follows consultations with industry stakeholders and aims to balance lower entry costs with tight consumer protection.

Nigeria's SEC says its tougher rules are designed to strengthen investor protection, improve corporate governance, and reduce systemic risks as digital assets become more integrated into the financial system. However, analysts argue that this approach will give foreign players an advantage over local crypto firms and may lead to a trade-off between innovation and harm prevention.
