Nigerian Crypto Regulation: A Double-Edged Sword

Share

Nigeria's proposed 1.5% stamp duty on virtual asset transactions has sparked debate about its potential impact on the crypto market.

However, according to Bidemi Oke, CEO of FlashChange, a fintech platform focused on secure digital asset exchange, there are more pressing concerns than the actual tax rate.

Oke argues that the real question is what behavior this regulation will create. He suggests that by adding another cost to the formal rails, some customers may absorb it, while others may reduce their activity or seek cheaper alternatives.

This could lead to a paradox where the policy collects revenue but weakens the market it's trying to formalize. Oke believes there are four key questions regulators should answer when designing new rules for virtual assets:

i. Does it make the market more trustworthy?

ii. Does it keep legitimate liquidity inside the regulated ecosystem?

iii. Does it make bad behavior harder without making ordinary activity unnecessarily difficult?

iv. Does it leave enough room for serious businesses to keep building?
