North Carolina Police Officer Foils Crypto Scam on 90-Year-Old Woman
A 90-year-old woman in North Carolina nearly lost $10,000 to a cryptocurrency scam before being rescued by a quick-thinking police officer. Mary Ann Nunley received a text message on July 27 stating that her account with Geek Squad had ended and that she would be charged $390.
Nunley called the number provided, and after hours of back-and-forth with the scammer, was told she needed to take nearly $10,000 to a nearby bitcoin kiosk to fix the situation. However, when she arrived at the gas station, she found that the machine was broken.
Wilmington Police Officer Nicholas Morrison happened to be on a routine check at the gas station and recognized warning signs of a crypto scam. He approached Nunley and told her not to put her money in the machine, and instead helped her end the call with the scammer.
Morrison then took Nunley to Best Buy to confirm that Geek Squad was not involved in taking her money, and drove her to the bank to redeposit her cash. The officer's timely intervention saved Nunley from losing nearly $10,000.
