North Korea Arrests Elite Hackers in Internal Crypto Heist
North Korean authorities have arrested a group of elite hackers accused of stealing and laundering cryptocurrency from state financial institutions. The arrests, which took place on July 12, follow an internal investigation into suspicious crypto transfers linked to the Chosun Central Bank and the Foreign Trade Bank.
The hackers allegedly recruited graduates from leading technical universities, including Kim Chaek University of Technology and Pyongyang University of Science. They reportedly used encrypted communication systems and Chinese wireless equipment during their operation.
Investigators believe the stolen cryptocurrency was moved through brokers based in China, who converted it into cash before exchanging it with contacts near North Korea's border for fiat currencies. The investigation connected these transactions to the arrested North Korean hackers.
The United Nations, the United States, South Korea, and Japan have repeatedly accused North Korean hackers of stealing billions of dollars in cryptocurrency, but North Korea has consistently rejected these allegations as politically motivated.
