North Korea Detains Own Hackers for Stealing State Funds via Crypto
North Korea has reportedly detained its own hackers for allegedly embezzling government funds from two state-owned financial institutions and laundering proceeds via cryptocurrency channels.
The suspects, former military cyber operatives and technology experts, are accused of breaching the Central Bank of the DPRK and Foreign Trade Bank systems in July 2026. They allegedly siphoned foreign currency reserves and trade-related funds into cryptocurrency wallets located overseas, using a web of intermediaries stationed in Chinese cities along the border.
The operation relied on fragmented transactions to evade surveillance, as well as encrypted messaging platforms, unregistered mobile devices, and Chinese wireless infrastructure. The laundered assets were converted into US dollars and Chinese yuan via Chinese over-the-counter cryptocurrency traders.
