North Korean Hackers Drive $1.1B in Onchain Losses Amid Record Exploits
The first half of 2026 was marked by a significant surge in onchain security threats, according to Blockaid's H1 2026 Onchain Security Report.
Blockaid verified a record 212 high-threshold exploits during the six months, a 3.4-fold increase over all of 2025. Total dollar losses reached $1.1 billion, with North Korean hackers driving approximately $609 million of overall losses.
The majority of financial losses were concentrated in a handful of high-profile security breaches driven by North Korea's 'Trader Traitor' hacking cluster, tied to the Lazarus Group. The two largest exploits, KelpDAO and Drift Protocol, were attributed to Trader Traitor and resulted in $292 million and $285 million in losses, respectively.
The report highlighted three major security boundaries that emerged in 2026: EIP-7702 wallet delegation attacks, AI prompt injection, and off-chain bridge infrastructure. Blockaid warns that Web3 ecosystems should prepare for continued pressure in the second half of the year due to persistent social engineering campaigns by sanctioned nation-state actors.
