North Korea's Crypto Hackers Strike Again, $1 Billion Lost in First Half of 2024
The cryptocurrency industry has faced significant losses due to hacks in the first half of 2024, surpassing $1 billion. According to Blockaid's mid-year report, most of these losses came from smart contract exploits, private key compromises, and phishing attacks on Ethereum and Solana-based DeFi protocols.
The majority of stolen funds were taken from projects built on the two most widely used blockchain networks, with North Korean-linked hacker groups accounting for approximately $600 million. This marks a continuation of the trend observed since 2022, where these groups have been linked to multiple high-value heists.
Blockchain analytics firms and law enforcement agencies have struggled to recover stolen funds due to their involvement in mixing services and cross-chain swaps. The scale of attacks in the first half of 2024 is roughly on par with the same period in 2023, suggesting that security improvements have not kept pace with growth.
