Norway Seizes Russian Ship in Svalbard to Collect $4.22 Billion Arbitration Award
The war between Russia and Ukraine has led to a series of legal battles beyond their borders. In a significant development, Norway seized a Russian ship in Svalbard to satisfy a $4.22 billion arbitration award won by Ukrainian company Naftogaz in 2023.
Naftogaz filed its arrest petition on August 28, and the local court granted it without notifying Russia, citing danger in delay due to Russia's history of taking steps to avoid enforcement of foreign judgments.
The seized ship, Professor Molchanov, was involved in activities that support Russian claims over Svalbard. Researchers say it has been used for surveillance and hybrid operations, ferrying Russian agents who promoted Russian claims to the territory.
