Norway's $1.7 Trillion Fund Buys into Ethereum Accumulation Play
Norges Bank, manager of Norway's $1.7 trillion Government Pension Fund Global, has quietly acquired an $82 million stake in BitMine Immersion Technologies through a holding that includes 6,151,062 shares.
The fund's investment gives it indirect exposure to Ethereum (ETH) through BMNR, which has pivoted from Bitcoin mining to accumulating ETH at an unprecedented scale. As of early August, BitMine held approximately 5.8 million ETH, representing roughly 4.8% of Ethereum's total circulating supply.
BitMine's transformation into an Ethereum accumulation play began in June 2025, when it raised $250 million in a private placement to fund the pivot. The company now focuses on ETH per share as its primary performance metric, making it easier for traditional investors to evaluate the stock as a leveraged bet on Ethereum's price.
Norges Bank's position is significant because it represents institutional validation of BitMine's aggressive strategy. By holding nearly 5% of circulating supply in staked form, BitMine earns protocol rewards and introduces yield dynamics that don't exist in Bitcoin treasury plays like MicroStrategy's.
