Kristoffer Koch, a Norwegian student, spent $27 on 5,000 Bitcoins in 2009 as part of his thesis research on encryption. At the time, Bitcoin was largely unknown and its real-world usefulness unproven.

Koch viewed the purchase as an academic experiment, stored his Bitcoins in a digital wallet, and forgot about them. Four years passed without incident, but everything changed in 2013 when Bitcoin's price began to rise.

Koch suddenly remembered his purchase and tried to access his wallet, but had forgotten the password. After searching for it, he finally managed to gain access and found a long way from the $27 he initially spent.

At the time, Koch's 5,000 Bitcoins were worth around $886,000, making him an unexpected fortune. He decided to sell approximately one-fifth of his holdings and used the money to buy an apartment in Oslo.
