Norwegian Student's $27 Bitcoin Investment Grows to Small Fortune
Kristoffer Koch, a Norwegian student, stumbled upon Bitcoin in 2009 while researching encryption for his thesis. He decided to experiment and spent $27 on 5,000 Bitcoins at the time, viewing it as an academic exercise. The purchase was made with no intention of turning a profit, and Koch forgot all about it.
Four years passed before Koch remembered his Bitcoin investment in 2013. However, he had also forgotten the password protecting his wallet. After trying various combinations, he finally gained access to his account.
The amount of Bitcoins in his wallet was staggering: 5,000. At the time, this was equivalent to approximately $886,000, a small fortune born from an almost accidental purchase. Koch decided to turn part of this virtual wealth into something more tangible by selling one-fifth of his Bitcoins.
The Norwegian used the money to buy an apartment in Tøyen, Oslo. The deal appears even more extraordinary considering Bitcoin's violent price swings during 2013: it climbed above $260 before crashing to around $50.
