Novo Nordisk Aims to Close Gap with Rival Eli Lilly in Obesity Drug Market
Novo Nordisk has rebranded itself as 'Novo' in an effort to close the gap with rival Eli Lilly in the obesity drug market. The company's CEO, Mike Doustdar, said that the rebrand and culture shift are part of a new strategy to adapt to the changing environment.
The operating environment has shifted from a stable insulin-like market to one that behaves more like a consumer market, where patients cycle on and off drugs. Novo Nordisk's new corporate culture framework is built around four principles: customer obsession, competitiveness, clarity, and care and integrity.
Doustdar emphasized the importance of speed in executing this strategy, but noted that there is still work to be done across research, manufacturing, and sales. The company has also reversed its Apis bull logo, a nod to changing course while keeping its heritage intact.
The rebrand did not sit well with investors, who saw the stock fall by around 15.8% year-to-date and off roughly 21% over the past year. Despite this, Doustdar remains optimistic, citing early Medicare uptake among obesity patients as an encouraging sign for demand.
