NSA Drops Opposition to CLARITY Act Ahead of Crucial Senate Vote
The National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) has changed its stance on the CLARITY Act, shifting from opposition to neutrality. This shift comes just before senators vote on whether the crypto market-structure bill can enter formal debate in September.
The NSA's letter to Senate leaders on September 3 stated that due to the complexity of the legislation and several important details still under consideration, they are changing their position on the CLARITY Act to neutral. This means they will no longer urge senators to reject the bill but also do not endorse it.
On September 15, senators will vote on whether to end debate on the motion to proceed, which would clear the way for a vote on formally taking up the bill. A successful cloture vote requires 60 votes, and this result will be an early test of whether supporters have assembled a workable Senate coalition.
While the NSA has dropped its opposition, law-enforcement groups are still focused on DeFi responsibility and investigative authority. Banking groups, meanwhile, are pressing for stricter limits on deposit-like stablecoin rewards. The Senate's decision on September 15 will determine if CLARITY enters formal consideration or not.
