NSA Drops Opposition to Clarity Act Amid Complexity Concerns

The National Sheriffs' Association has reversed its stance on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, moving from opposition to neutrality. The group's president and executive director wrote to Senate leaders that the legislation is too complex and needs further consideration.

This change comes after the NSA initially warned senators in May that section 604 of the bill would give mixers, tumblers, and DeFi platforms a blanket exemption from anti-money-laundering rules. The NSA claimed this could enable illicit activities such as money laundering, financing terrorism, and evading sanctions.

Despite the reversal, the Clarity Act's path to becoming law remains uncertain. It is set for a cloture vote in September, but an unresolved ethics provision and a crowded legislative calendar may hinder its progress.
