NSA Reverses Opposition to CLARITY Act Amid Regulatory Framework Complexity
The National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) has reversed its opposition to the CLARITY Act, a proposed bill aimed at clarifying the regulatory framework for digital assets in the US.
The NSA had previously expressed concerns that the bill could create loopholes for money laundering and regulatory evasion by exempting certain crypto developers and infrastructure providers from money transmitter rules.
However, in a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, NSA President Sheriff Troy Wellman and Executive Director Justin Smith stated that they were changing their stance to neutral due to the complexity of the legislation.
The updated bill was introduced in July, addressing concerns over stablecoin yield and ethics, including a ban on government officials and their families from issuing or promoting crypto.
Pro-crypto Senator Cynthia Lummis praised the bipartisan bill as providing law enforcement with 'real tools to fight the illicit finance crimes hurting hard working Americans.'
