Nvidia and Micron Drive Wall Street Growth as Bitcoin Surges Past $80,000
Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, has highlighted the concentration of growth in two key companies on Wall Street. According to Sonders, Nvidia and Micron will drive a third of the SP 500's 2026 earnings growth.
Nvidia alone accounts for 18% of the S&P 500's expected year-over-year earnings growth, while Micron's AI memory chips add another 14 percentage points. This concentration of earnings has led to a market dynamic where rotation into concentrated winners and away from crowded positions is the defining characteristic.
The chipmakers' earnings report arrives on Wednesday, with some analysts predicting a near-certain beat despite Nvidia's seven straight losing sessions. Bitcoin has broken above $80,000, coinciding with heavier bond market stress and dollar weakness, which Sonders ties to fading confidence in the dollar and Treasury policy.
The rise of Bitcoin and gold as hedges is seen as a debasement trade returning, where capital seeks scarce assets. Traders now face two signals to reconcile: whether concentrated AI earnings can justify record index weights, and whether Bitcoin's break above $80,000 marks a lasting rotation or just a short squeeze.
