Nvidia's Josh Parker Tackles Sustainability Questions in AI Industry
Nvidia's Josh Parker is one of TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People in AI. He joined the company in 2023, when there was only one other person on a team responsible for leading sustainability strategy and public policy initiatives.
Parker believes Nvidia can make a positive impact with its AI technology, particularly in areas like automated energy management and image-recognition recycling. However, he acknowledges that the AI industry faces questions about its environmental impact.
Nvidia has set a 2030 target to reduce its emissions but has not yet released data on the full climate footprint of its products. Parker notes that indirect greenhouse gas emissions from Nvidia's value chain nearly tripled over two years, as reported in the company's annual sustainability report in June.
Parker says Nvidia is working to make newer data centers more energy-efficient, with its latest Rubin generation of AI architecture achieving 100% liquid cooling. This breakthrough could help dramatically reduce cooling energy consumption, and the company is also piloting technologies that allow data centers to adjust their power usage during periods of peak demand.
