NYC Property Database Raises Alarm Among Crypto Execs

A searchable database of New York City property records has sparked controversy among cryptocurrency executives and critics, who warn that it puts wealthy residents at risk.

The database, built from public property records, allows users to easily search for property owners' information. Critics argue that this makes it easier for potential attackers to identify and target affluent individuals, pointing to recent cases of crypto-related kidnappings and violent attacks in Europe.

Uniswap founder Hayden Adams called the database 'the worst mass doxxing I've ever seen,' saying it listed nearly every unit in luxury apartment buildings, including primary residences of people he knows. Helius CEO Mert Mumtaz described the database as 'unsettling' and said it crossed a line by transforming scattered public records into a centralized resource that singles out wealthy individuals.

The criticism comes amid a rise in physical attacks targeting cryptocurrency holders, with incidents including kidnappings, torture, home invasions, and sexual assaults. In 2025, blockchain security firm CertiK reported 72 verified crypto 'wrench attacks' worldwide, up 75% from the previous year and resulting in over $40.9 million in losses.

Crypto executives warn that an easily searchable database of affluent property owners could make potential victims easier to identify. Castle Island Ventures partner Nic Carter pointed out that such a list can lead to crypto kidnappings, torturings, and murders, as seen in France and Sweden.
