NYSE Launches Blockchain-Powered Settlement Infrastructure for Tokenized Securities
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has announced plans to launch a blockchain-powered settlement infrastructure for tokenized securities. This innovative platform, developed in collaboration with Intercontinental Exchange, combines NYSE's established Pillar matching engine with distributed ledger technology for post-trade processing.
The system is designed to enable continuous 24/7 trading, real-time settlement execution, fractional share ownership, USD-based order placement, stablecoin payment options, and compatibility with various blockchain protocols. This infrastructure aims to introduce atomic settlement capabilities, synchronizing trade execution with immediate ownership transfer, which would significantly reduce the time required for stock settlements from the current T+1 schedule.
NYSE President Lynn Martin stated that the exchange participated in DTCC's tokenization pilot program alongside leading financial institutions such as BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Nasdaq. The pilot program successfully executed live production transactions on July 15, transforming DTC-held securities into tokenized formats for utilization in actual transactions.
The regulatory framework permitting the trading of tokenized equities on NYSE platforms has already been established through a SEC filing from April. DTCC's comprehensive Tokenization Service is scheduled for release in October following successful testing phase.
