NYSE Unveils Blockchain-Based Platform for Tokenized Securities Trading

Share

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is building a blockchain-based platform for trading and settling tokenized securities. This initiative, developed under parent company Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), will pair NYSE's existing Pillar matching engine with blockchain systems handling post-trade operations.

The result will be 24/7 trading, instant on-chain settlement, dollar-denominated orders, stablecoin funding, and multi-chain support. Instant settlement is a key feature of the platform, allowing trades to settle simultaneously with the transfer of ownership.

Traditionally, stock trades in the US settle on a T+1 basis, meaning one business day after the trade executes. The NYSE's platform promises atomic settlement, where the trade and the transfer of ownership happen at the same time.

The stablecoin component is also crucial to making 24/7 trading operationally realistic. Banks close on weekends, but stablecoins do not require traditional banking rails to function.
