NZD Suffers Before PCE Index Release and RBNZ Rate Decision
The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) declined against the US Dollar (USD) on Wednesday as the greenback gained momentum ahead of the release of Personal Consumption Expenditures data, a key indicator of inflation. The NZD/USD pair traded around 0.5960 during Asian hours, down from its previous day's modest gains.
Traders are eagerly awaiting Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at the Jackson Hole symposium on Friday for guidance on the Federal Reserve's policy decision in September. However, the upside of the USD could be restrained due to easing safe-haven demand following reports that Iran and Oman discussed establishing a temporary joint maritime corridor in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) is expected to raise interest rates by 25 basis points at its upcoming policy meeting, which could support the NZD. However, Brown Brothers Harriman's Elias Haddad notes that the recent retail data delivered a negative surprise, with total retail sales volume dropping -0.5% q/q in Q2.
