OCC Eases Crypto Restrictions for US Banks
The US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has relaxed rules for banks engaging in cryptocurrency activities. The regulatory body has removed a requirement that previously forced banks to meet specific conditions before participating in crypto-related operations.
This change allows financial institutions to manage crypto assets and participate in stablecoin activities without special pre-approval. Banks will still need to demonstrate strong risk management controls, as stated by Acting Comptroller of the Currency Rodney E. Hood: 'The OCC expects banks to have the same strong risk management controls in place to support novel bank activities as they do for traditional ones.'
The policy shift is a reversal of a directive issued during the Biden Administration, which had required explicit regulatory clearance before participating in cryptocurrency activities.
