OCC Rushes to Finalize Stablecoin Rules Amid Looming Deadline
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), the main banking regulator in the US, is racing to finalize its rules for stablecoin issuers by November. This move comes as the agency aims to meet a looming deadline for the historic country's Digital Dollar Law.
Jonathan Gould, the head of the OCC, announced the timeline at the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium, an event organized by SALT in Jackson. He stated that the agency is working at an accelerated pace and expects to publish a final rule by November while evaluating feedback from the crypto industry.
Gould emphasized the agency's commitment to acting quickly and issuing a final rule by November so they can begin processing applications come 2027. The rules will implement the GENIUS Law, a structure for stablecoins that President Donald Trump signed in July 2025. The law tasks federal regulators with drafting the details governing payment stablecoins and takes effect in January 2027.
The agencies face a legal deadline of January 18 to have their regulations in place, having already missed an earlier target of July. This has led to concerns about persistent regulatory uncertainty.
