Oconee County Scam Victims Recover Stolen Cryptocurrency Thanks to Joint Investigation
Authorities in Oconee County, Georgia have successfully recovered stolen cryptocurrency for elderly victims of a scam. The recovery was made possible through a joint effort between state and local investigators.
The scam involved pop-up messages on victims' computers claiming their bank accounts had been breached. Victims then contacted people they believed were agents with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), only to be communicating with scammers who instructed them to withdraw money from their bank accounts and deposit it into cryptocurrency kiosks.
According to authorities, investigators were able to trace the stolen cryptocurrency and recover the funds. Oconee County deputies, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), and the White Collar and Cyber Crime Unit of the Georgia Attorney General's office worked together to return the money to the victims.
