Okeechobee County Warns of Romance-Involved Crypto Scam
The Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office in Florida is warning residents about a new cryptocurrency scam that involves building false romantic relationships with potential victims. According to the sheriff's office, scammers are spending days, weeks, or even months developing these relationships before introducing the victim to a 'can't miss' cryptocurrency investment opportunity.
OCSO says that by the time the victim realizes they've been scammed, it may be too late and thousands of dollars could already have been lost. The scammer may encourage the victim to download an app or use a trading platform, only to ask for additional fees or taxes when trying to withdraw funds.
'Remember: Real relationships don't come with investment advice or pressure to send cryptocurrency,' OCSO said in a Facebook post. 'They come with love, understanding and the need of you, not your finances.'
