A major Bitcoin mining data center in El Reno, Oklahoma, has come under fire after a significant leak released an estimated 3 million gallons of water. The incident forced schools, businesses, and city and county offices to close last week.

The facility, owned by Athlon Blockchain LLC, was issued a Stop Work Order in 2023 due to 'multiple fire and life safety code violations' and the expiration of building and electrical permits.

Despite the order, it appears that operations continued, with the company reportedly given until the end of 2023 to correct the issues and obtain new permits. However, construction was expected to remain on hold until those requirements were met.

The city is now pursuing the property owner for costs associated with the incident and its response, stating that local residents will not be left with the bill.
