Oklahoma Bitcoin Mining Site Condemned Over Massive Water Leak During Drought
A severe water leak at an Oklahoma Bitcoin mining site has sparked concerns about regulatory oversight. The incident occurred when a damaged private water line connected to an unauthorized fire hydrant at Athlon Blockchain Technology LLC's El Reno facility leaked approximately 3-3.8 million gallons of water into the ground.
The drought-stricken region was particularly affected, with plummeting water pressure forcing schools and public buildings to shut down temporarily due to dry taps. The culprit behind the leak was an unsanctioned fire hydrant installed by Athlon without authorization.
City officials condemned the site and issued a 10-day removal notice to the property owner. El Reno Mayor Steve Jensen confirmed that taxpayers would not be responsible for the costs associated with the massive leak, which the city plans to charge to Athlon based on metered water usage and response efforts.
