A Bitcoin mining facility in El Reno, Oklahoma, has been condemned by the city after it leaked between 3 and 3.8 million gallons of water due to an unauthorized fire hydrant.

The leak caused a significant drop in city-wide water pressure, leading to school closures amid a severe drought.

Athlon Blockchain Technology LLC, the operator of the facility, had been operating without proper permits since June 2023.

The city plans to charge the company for the water loss and response costs, and an administrative hearing is scheduled to decide further actions against Athlon.
