Oklahoma Data Center Fire Hazards Exposed

A recent investigation by the El Reno fire marshal in Oklahoma uncovered a house of horrors at a Bitcoin-mining data center operated by Athlon BT. The inquiry was sparked by a massive leak of nearly four million gallons of water in August, which forced the city into an unofficial stand-still.

Inspectors had already found violations related to drainage, maintenance, and access when they discovered further alarming issues inside the facility. These included vessels containing flammable liquids stored near combustible materials, improperly maintained fire extinguishers, and electrical equipment in disrepair.

The city ultimately gave the data center a 'failing' grade due to the numerous fire hazards, which are particularly concerning given the high risk of conflagration at such facilities. Data centers often rely on massive electrical loads, lithium-ion batteries, and high-temperature chips, making them prone to fires that can be costly and hazardous for nearby residents.
