Oklahoma Data Center Leak Exposes Drought Vulnerabilities

A data center in El Reno, Oklahoma, that's linked to AI and bitcoin mining operations leaked over 3 million gallons of water after a private water line failed.

The incident occurred during one of the worst droughts the state has seen since 2022, with 100 percent of Oklahoma experiencing drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

The data center, owned by Athlon BT, was constructed after a building permit was issued in 2021, but El Reno officials claim it may have continued construction and operation despite lacking a certificate of occupancy.

City officials condemned the property, citing the water line failure as a hazard to public health and safety. The incident has raised concerns about water-intensive data centers during drought conditions.
