Old Bitcoin Wallets Stir as $777,000 Coins Move for First Time in Over a Decade
A cluster of dormant Bitcoin addresses has become active in August, with some coins dating back to as far as 2011. One wallet that initially received 10 BTC on June 17, 2011, when the price was around $15 per coin, moved its holdings on August 29th. The transfer was made in block 964,539 and contained approximately 4,682 transactions.
The initial acquisition of these coins would have cost about $150, but the current value is estimated to be around $777,000, according to Galaxy Research data. This represents a staggering 503,000% price increase over the past decade.
While some may view this as evidence that an early holder has exited the market, it's essential to note that moving coins between wallets does not necessarily imply a sale. The transaction could be related to various reasons such as wallet security upgrades, inheritance, or custody restructuring.
This trend of old wallets becoming active is reminiscent of previous episodes where long-dormant addresses moved Bitcoin after years of inactivity. Such events draw attention because they involve the movement of supply that rarely circulates, which becomes increasingly significant as Bitcoin approaches its maximum supply.
