Onchain Markets Surge as RWA Perpetuals Reach $4.8B
The growth of Real-World Assets (RWA) perpetuals has transformed onchain markets, reaching an open interest of approximately $4.8 billion. This significant increase marks a shift away from niche trading and towards mainstream acceptance.
RWA perps are gaining traction as traders increasingly use blockchain-based venues to access exposure to equities, commodities, currencies, and indexes. Public equities currently account for nearly half of the tracked open interest, followed by precious metals, equity indexes, and oil.
The rise of RWA perps is also driven by growing competition among onchain trading venues and blockchain networks, such as Sui, which offer decentralized infrastructure for accessing traditional market exposure. This expansion is turning RWA perps into a rapidly growing segment of onchain derivatives.
While the growth of RWA perps presents opportunities for DeFi platforms to generate fees and attract liquidity, it also raises challenges, including oracle reliability, liquidation mechanisms, liquidity depth, and regulatory uncertainty around referenced assets.
