$OnlyMarms Crypto Rises Amid Marmot Study Funding Crisis
A team of scientists behind a 60-year study of marmots has received an unexpected boost in funding thanks to cryptocurrency.
The researchers turned to OnlyFans, an adult-content website, in June to raise funds for their project after it was threatened by science funding cuts imposed by Donald Trump's administration.
Although they raised $6,000 on the platform, a new marmot-themed cryptocurrency called $OnlyMarms has donated all transaction fees to the study and raised over $88,000 in just two weeks. This brings the total amount of funds raised to over $100,000, allowing the research to continue for another year.
The project, which began in 1962, aims to monitor marmot behavior and adaptability as the climate crisis affects their habitats. The researchers have observed changes in body mass and hibernation patterns due to warmer temperatures and reduced snowfall.
