$OnlyMarms Marmot Coin Saves Research Program
Researchers studying marmots in the US west have received an unexpected funding boost from cryptocurrency enthusiasts. The project, which has been running for 60 years, was facing termination due to science funding cuts imposed by Donald Trump's administration.
In desperation, the researchers turned to OnlyFans, an adult-content website, to raise funds. They created an account called OnlyMarms and posted photos of marmots scurrying across rocky landscapes, but not any explicit content. This effort raised a modest $6,000 for the marmots.
However, a new meme coin named $OnlyMarms was recently created by outside supporters of the project. The cryptocurrency is based on the Solana blockchain and donates all transaction fees to the study. In just two weeks, it has raised over $88,000, bringing the total funding for the project to over $100,000.
The researchers are grateful for the unexpected windfall, but acknowledge that it's not a substitute for standard government funding. They hope to continue monitoring the marmots and understanding their impact on the climate crisis.
