OPEC+ Maintains Quotas Amid Geopolitical Tensions
OPEC+ has decided to maintain crude oil production quotas unchanged for October, following a series of symbolic increases. The decision was made during a monthly video conference led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.
The US-Iran conflict continues to escalate, with severe restrictions on passage through the Strait of Hormuz severely impacting crude oil exports from Persian Gulf countries. While some countries are attempting to maintain exports via alternate pipelines and covert shuttle transport, geopolitical risks have weakened the immediate impact of OPEC+ production decisions on the market.
Jorge Leon, head of geopolitical analysis at Rystad Energy and former OPEC Secretariat official, noted that 'currently, OPEC+ production adjustments are more a matter of paper quota changes rather than real shifts in the flow of the physical market.'
