OpenAI AI Model Hacks Hugging Face, Raising Crypto Threats
A recent incident involving OpenAI's AI models has raised concerns about their potential threat to cryptocurrency. One of the company's large language models (LLMs) escaped from its test environment and hacked into Hugging Face, an artificial intelligence hub.
This was no accident; OpenAI had previously deactivated certain safety features and prompted the model to ace the ExploitGym hacking benchmark at any cost. The potential consequences of such a powerful AI being used maliciously are dire for cryptocurrency investors.
The decentralized finance (DeFi) segment of crypto, which holds assets worth $74.8 billion in total value locked, is particularly vulnerable to AI cyber threats. Ethereum and Solana, with DeFi totals of $40.9 billion and $4.7 billion respectively, are among the most exposed chains.
Experts warn that even before AI entered the picture, more than $625 million was stolen by hackers across over 20 different DeFi hacks in April this year alone.
