OpenAI Backs 14 Global Projects with $1M Funding to Shape AI Policy
OpenAI has announced $1 million in grant funding for 14 independent projects aimed at shaping AI policy. The initiative spans research and applied work across five regions, including the United States, European Union, Brazil, Singapore, and South Korea.
The projects focus on two critical questions: how AI can broaden economic opportunity and how societies can build resilience as AI capabilities advance. Among the initiatives funded, the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and the Urban Institute will model scenarios of AI-driven workforce disruption.
On the resilience front, the Institute for Security and Technology plans to develop a framework for managing risks associated with recursively self-improving AI systems. These projects align with OpenAI's stated belief that policy decisions should not rest solely with technology companies but should involve democratic institutions, independent researchers, and the public.
